Organic Gardening – Building Foundations

What

An organic gardening course in which students will take part in group exercises and individual work in the courtyard garden at The Museum of Edinburgh, 142-146 Canongate.

Organic gardening knowledge will be outlined by a professional gardener, which the students will then apply in the garden. Students will learn to be punctual and regular attendance is encouraged regardless of weather. They will be solving practical problems, learning to give and take direction, providing support to new members, and sharing tasks to make up a well-functioning team. All skills gained are readily transferable to the workplace and will enhance the student’s CV.

Students may join at any time, but those who manage to sustain for four weeks (of the five week course) will be awarded an Employability Training outcome or Working with Others qualification. Anyone who takes part will be given a certificate of attendance once the course is completed.

Who

Eligibility criteria applies and spaces are limited. If you are interested, contact us or speak to your Caseworker for more details.

When

The course runs periodically, usually in the summer months, one half day a week. Summer 2026 term dates TBC.

Why

Teaches students all about general organic gardening, whilst encouraging key skills like problem solving, teamwork and taking direction.

Where

The course is delivered fully outdoors at the courtyard garden of The Museum of Edinburgh, 142-146 Canongate.
